NSEC 2026 exam guide

Understand the examination, its question pattern and the route from NSEC to the Chemistry Olympiad programme.

What is NSEC?

The National Standard Examination in Chemistry is the first stage of India’s Chemistry Olympiad selection programme. IAPT conducts the first-stage examinations with the relevant teacher associations, including the Association of Chemistry Teachers for chemistry. HBCSE organises later stages.

Date and duration

Sunday, 22 November 2026, 11:30 am–1:30 pm IST. The examination lasts two hours. Check your admit card and official notices for centre-specific instructions.

Question pattern and marking

SectionQuestionsCorrectIncorrect / incompleteMaximum
Single correct48+3−1144
Multiple correct12+60; no partial credit72
Total60Unattempted: 0120 minutes216

In the multiple-correct section, selecting even one incorrect option or missing one correct option earns no marks. Treat every option as a separate claim that needs a reason.

What level should you expect?

The content broadly follows senior-secondary chemistry, but the reasoning can be unfamiliar. You may need to connect chapters, interpret a graph or experiment, or combine several calculations. Familiarity with a formula is only the starting point.

Use the actual past papers as the difficulty benchmark. The foundation mock on this site teaches the format and broad coverage; it is not a prediction of the official paper’s difficulty.

The chemistry pathway

  1. NSEC: first-stage selection examination.
  2. INChO: Indian National Chemistry Olympiad.
  3. Orientation-cum-Selection Camp: training and further selection.
  4. Pre-departure training for the selected team.
  5. International Chemistry Olympiad.

HBCSE currently lists INChO for 30 January 2027, 1:30–4:30 pm. Selected students must complete the separate required INO registration.

Exam-day preparation

  • Read the current admit-card instructions and organise the required identity documents.
  • Practise transferring answers carefully and checking the question number.
  • Confirm permitted materials from the current instructions. Do not assume calculator rules from an older paper automatically apply.
  • Plan two passes through the paper, leaving time to review marked answers.
